The Importance of Retaining Walls

If your home has been built on a hill, you could probably benefit greatly from the use a few good retaining walls. What good is a yard that is too sloped to be functional? Unless you love sledding and live in an area where it snows frequently, having a slopped backyard is probably not ideal.

Many homeowners in this situation have portions of their lawn leveled, sectioned off by retaining walls with steps leading down to each area.

This article from explains everything you need to know about retaining walls.

Retaining walls not only provide your previously useless yard with some sort of functionality, but they also add an aesthetic dimension to your yard. But where should you start? Obviously safety and functionality comes before beauty, but you want the whole package.

Retaining Wall To Do List:

•     Strength is a must: These walls need to be strong enough to hold back the earth they support while still looking good.

•     Drainage is important: Wet earth is heavy. If water is not properly drained, your retaining wall may eventually fail under the pressure.

•     Segmented retaining wall systems (SRW) are the safest: This is how the professionals feel.

•     Have your walls professionally installed: If improperly built, retaining walls can become dangerous. They are, after all, holding back tons of dirt, rock, and other materials.

  1. It makes sense that you should have a retaining wall done by a professional to avoid it breaking and hurting someone. My wife and I have been wanting to add a few things to our yard, and I think that a retaining wall would be functional but also look great. We’ll have to ask around for a good landscaper who could help us get this all set up.

  2. My husband and I recently bought a house and it was built on a little bit of a hill, so we are thinking of adding a retaining wall so that it makes it easier to use our yard and help to avoid the slant. You make a great point that you need to choose a wall that will be strong enough to hold back the earth that they are supporting because I want the wall to be durable and last for many years to come. Also, it makes sense that the retaining wall should be installed professionally because a professional will know the best place for the wall and the best material for our needs.
